A South American Mercosur biometric passport, also known as an e-passport, issued between 2017 and 2022, refers to a travel document adhering to the standards set by Mercosur (Southern Common Market) and incorporating biometric technology. Mercosur is a trade bloc composed of Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay. Venezuela was formerly a member but its membership was suspended in 2016.
Key Features of a Mercosur Biometric Passport:
-
Biometric Data: These passports contain an embedded microchip that stores the passport holder’s biometric data, primarily a digital facial image, and sometimes fingerprints. This data enhances security and expedites identity verification at border control.
-
Design and Format: In accordance with Mercosur regulations, the passports typically have a blue cover with “MERCOSUR” written on the top, followed by the country’s name, national coat of arms, and the word “Passport” in the respective language. The passports also feature a standardized layout for personal information and security features to prevent forgery.
-
Security Features: These passports incorporate various security features such as watermarks, micro-lettering, special inks (UV, iridescent, and secure), and holographic images to prevent counterfeiting and ensure the document’s integrity.
